Security has been heightened in and around the National Assembly complex ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled appearance before a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives today.

The President is expected to deliver his June 12 broadcast to the joint session of the National Assembly at 12 p.m. in commemoration of Democracy Day.

A combined team of security operatives, including personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been stationed at all main entry points leading to the National Assembly.

As of 7:30 a.m., The Guardian observed that routine security checks at the gates have been intensified, with vehicular movement closely monitored and restricted.

Entry into the complex has been limited, as special accreditation arrangements were made for journalists, security agents, and members of staff who would be on duty.

The security build-up follows the President’s cancellation of a previously scheduled national broadcast slated for 7 a.m. today.

The 2025 Democracy Day, themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms,” marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria since the end of military rule in 1999.

Moreover, it also represents the third Democracy Day celebration under the Tinubu administration.
