A fresh power tussle erupted on Tuesday at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja, as the Senator Samuel Anyanwu–led National Working Committee arrived at Wadata Plaza to assert control ahead of parallel meetings scheduled by rival factions.
Anyanwu, who resumed at his office in defiance of his reported expulsion, maintained that he remains PDP legitimate national secretary until his tenure ends in December. His presence at the secretariat signalled a renewed push by his camp to reclaim influence in the party’s leadership structure.
The atmosphere around the secretariat was tense, with security operatives manning key entry points and cordoning off parts of the premises. Their deployment heightened speculation about possible confrontations between the Anyanwu faction and the Turaki-led group, which had also announced plans to convene at the same venue.
When questioned, Anyanwu confirmed that he invited the security personnel, stating that it was standard procedure for the party to call in reinforcement whenever major meetings are slated.
“It is our tradition to ensure order during high-level engagements,” he said, adding that the operatives were also positioned to prevent disruptions from what he described as “intruders”—a pointed reference to the Turaki-led exco.
