Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured residents that his administration will take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence of the deadly attack on the National Park Service office in Oloka Village, Oriire Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of five forest guards.
The governor urged calm across the state, particularly in communities along border areas, as security agencies intensify operations to stabilise the situation and track those responsible for the assault.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Makinde described the incident as a grievous loss, noting that the slain officers were carrying out their lawful duties at the time of the attack. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the National Park Service, praying for the repose of the departed souls.
Preliminary findings by security agencies, according to the governor, suggest that the attack was carried out by bandits who crossed into the area from neighbouring states. He said this development underscored the need for coordinated, intelligence-driven security responses across state boundaries.
Makinde disclosed that security formations had been reinforced in and around Oriire and other vulnerable locations, adding that normalcy had been restored following swift intervention by law enforcement agencies. He stressed that the state government was working closely with federal security institutions to close gaps that allow criminal elements to exploit border communities.
The governor also appealed to residents to support ongoing investigations by sharing credible information with security agencies, insisting that community cooperation remained critical to sustaining peace.
“Our administration will leave no stone unturned in responding decisively to this threat and ensuring that such an attack does not happen again,” Makinde said.
