The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has released the timetable for the 2027 local government council elections, fixing Saturday, January 16, 2027, as Election Day across the state.

The commission gave the assurance that the exercise would be transparent, credible and peaceful, as it begins early preparations to deliver what it described as an acceptable grassroots democratic process.

The decision was taken at the inaugural meeting between the leadership of the commission and its management team, held at the OYSIEC headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan. The meeting was presided over by the commission’s chairman, Dr Babatunde Afees Adeniyi.

According to a statement issued after the meeting and made available to journalists on Thursday, elections will be conducted in all polling units across the 33 local government councils in Oyo State between 8.00am and 3.00pm on the scheduled date.

The statement noted that electioneering campaigns would end by midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027, while any supplementary or re-run election, where necessary, would take place on Saturday, January 23, 2027.

It further explained that the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors in the 33 local government councils would expire on May 23, 2027, in line with the provisions of the Oyo State Local Government Law.

“The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission is empowered by Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), to issue notice for elections not later than 360 days before the date of the election,” the statement read.

It added that, pursuant to relevant sections of the Electoral Act and the OYSIEC Law, formal notice had been issued for the conduct of the local government council elections across the state on January 16, 2027.

Dr Adeniyi, in the statement, enjoined political parties, aspirants and other stakeholders to cooperate fully with the commission, stressing that collective responsibility remained critical to achieving free, fair and credible elections.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and strengthening democratic governance at the grassroots, describing the timely release of the timetable as a signal of OYSIEC’s readiness to deliver on its constitutional mandate.
