A civil society organisation, the Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTION), has declared that Nigerians will not be cowed by the stance of the Senate over the rejection of real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The group’s Convener, Hauwa Mustapha, made the position known during an interview on Arise Television while reacting to protests staged by youths against the Senate’s decision.
Mustapha stressed that elected lawmakers must recognise the supremacy of the people, insisting that citizens have the right to demand reforms that strengthen the country’s electoral system.
According to her, the agitation for the amendment of the Electoral Act remains a legitimate demand that cannot be ignored by the National Assembly.
She said the protests were aimed at expressing widespread disappointment over what she described as the Senate’s handling of an issue that directly affects the credibility of elections.
Mustapha argued that Nigerians have a constitutional right to demand accountability from their representatives, adding that the campaign for election electronic transmission of results reflects a broader push for transparency and trust in the democratic process.
She also noted that the demonstration enjoyed strong support across the country, with many Nigerians showing solidarity through social media even if they were unable to participate physically.
