The Osun State Government has announced the appointment of Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund — a strategic move aimed at repositioning the state’s sports sector and attracting private investment.

The announcement, made through the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, underscores Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration’s commitment to transforming the state’s sports infrastructure and creating sustainable development channels for young athletes.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun chapter, to his office, Adewusi said the state government was determined to elevate sports to a globally competitive level.

According to him, the ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium would soon be completed, with the project designed to meet Olympic standards. “Our administration is committed to ensuring that the Osogbo Township Stadium becomes a world-class facility capable of hosting national and international sporting events,” he stated.

Adewusi further revealed that the state was finalising plans to establish the Osun State Sports Commission, which would serve as a central body for sports administration, policy formulation, and development.

He added that the introduction of the Sports Trust Fund, now chaired by Davido, would attract private and corporate funding to support the state’s sporting ambitions. “The Sports Trust Fund is designed to engage sports philanthropists and corporate stakeholders within and outside Osun, ensuring sustainable financing and long-term growth in the sector,” he explained.

Adewusi disclosed that Davido, who hails from the Adeleke family, accepted the appointment without hesitation, expressing enthusiasm to contribute to the state’s sports development agenda.

He expressed confidence that the involvement of the globally celebrated musician would bring renewed energy and credibility to the state’s efforts in harnessing sports as a tool for youth empowerment and economic diversification.

The Osun Sports Trust Fund is expected to coordinate investments in facilities, training, and talent development across local government areas, positioning the state as a regional hub for sports excellence.
