Ademola Lookman Named in CAF’s AFCON 2025 Group Stage Best XI

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has been named in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Best XI for the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) the only Nigerian player selected in the team announced on Friday.

 

The Atalanta star enjoyed a standout tournament so far, contributing two goals and two assists in Nigeria’s first two matches of the group phase, helping the Super Eagles finish top of Group C with a perfect record and qualify for the Round of 16.

 

CAF’s official Best XI places Lookman in a three‑man midfield alongside Morocco’s Brahim Díaz and Cameroon’s Carlos Baleba, highlighting his versatility and impact. The continental body praised his creative running, movement off the ball, and ability to both score and set up teammates, describing him as one of the dangerous players of the group stage.

 

In addition to Lookman’s recognition, Nigerian coach Eric Chelle was named the Best Coach of the group stage by CAF for leading the Super Eagles to consistent performances and tactical excellence.

 

The 2025 AFCON Best XI also features other African stars including Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, Senegal’s Sadio Mané, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, and Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo, reflecting the continent’s top talent heading into the knockout rounds.

 

Nigeria now prepares for its Round of 16 clash against Mozambique on January 5, with Lookman expected to remain central to the team’s title ambitions.
