A commercial bus on Monday caught fire on the Third Mainland Bridge near the Univeristy of Lagos Waterfront, inward Iyana-Oworonsoki, causing heavy traffic congestion and leaving six commuters injured.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the agency spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, noting that the accident involved a painted Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number KRD 436 XF.

“Initial findings indicate that the fully-laden commercial bus, transporting passengers in conjunction with assorted household effects, reportedly experienced a sudden and catastrophic mechanical failure of its braking system and gut fire while in transit,” Taofiq said.

Taofiq added that “the calamitous incident resulted in six passengers comprising two adult males and four adult females sustaining serious bodily injuries, while one passenger suffered a critical ocular injury at the instant of impact.”

Officials of the agency, who were on routine patrol in the area, were said to have responded immediately.

“Personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were actively deployed on routine surveillance duties within the affected corridor, responded with exemplary promptitude and operational efficiency,” the statement read.
