Tragedy struck Katsina metropolis on Thursday night as four people lost their lives and 18 others sustained injuries during the annual Ramadan Zakkat distribution at a private residence.
The incident occurred around 9 pm at the home of Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki in Kofar Guga Quarters, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama. He told reporters that a large crowd had gathered to receive alms when some individuals allegedly forced their way into the compound, sparking a stampede.
Responding swiftly, the Divisional Police Officer of Central Police Station, Katsina, deployed officers to the scene, restoring order and ensuring emergency assistance reached the victims. Eighteen injured persons were promptly taken to the General Hospital, Katsina, where they received medical attention.
Medical authorities confirmed the deaths of four individuals: Bilkisu Mamman, 40, of Kerau Quarters; Ihsan Musbahu, 40, of Abattoir Quarters; Aisha Sani, 16, of Kofar Sauri Quarters; and Salamatu Kabir, 45, of Sabuwar Unguwa Quarters. Another victim, 15-year-old Hafsat Zubairu of Masanawa Quarters, was referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Police confirmed that the organisers of the Zakkat distribution have been invited for questioning as part of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led to the deadly stampede.
Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and maintain order during public distributions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
