The Omoluabi Progressives, led by Alhaji Issa Adesiji Azeez, have condemned what they described as an “undemocratic and disgraceful” action by the Ogun State Police Command, alleging that officers blocked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) campaign team from entering the state ahead of Saturday’s Remo North Federal Constituency bye-election.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the group’s Organising and Publicity Secretary, Abosede Busayo Oluwaseun, the organisation accused the police of acting at the behest of the state government to frustrate the ADC’s participation in the electoral process.
According to the group, the blockade occurred on Wednesday despite the ADC having submitted an official notification letter to the police, a copy of which they claim has been made public. The action, they argued, deprived the party of the opportunity to engage with voters in Remo North.
“This unlawful blockade is not only a political disgrace but also a clear attempt to subvert the will of the people,” the statement read. “It is a stark reminder of the political intolerance that has become the trademark of the government in power.”
The Omoluabi Progressives warned that such developments signalled “tough days ahead” for Nigeria’s democracy if state institutions were used as tools of intimidation. They stressed that the ADC would remain resolute in its campaign for “truth, justice, and a better Nigeria,” and urged the electorate to “stand firm in defence of democracy.”
The group also challenged the Nigeria Police Force to maintain neutrality, suggesting that if it intended to act as a political player, it should “register as a political party and test its popularity at the polls.”
As of press time, the Ogun State Police Command had yet to issue a response to the allegations.
