The governments of Osun, Oyo, and Ogun states have declared Wednesday, August 20, a public holiday to mark the annual Isese Festival.

According to a statement released on Monday by AbdulRasheed Aderibigbe, Commissioner for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Osogbo, the holiday is intended to give traditionalists the opportunity to partake in the festival’s cultural and spiritual celebrations.

“Osun State Government is pleased to announce that Wednesday, August 20th 2025 will be observed as a Public Holiday to enable Traditional Religion Worshippers throughout the State to participate in the 2025 celebration of Isese Festival,” it said.

“This decision according to His Excellency reflects government commitment to recognizing and honouring the cultural heritage and traditions of the people of the State and promote cultural awareness and unity among the people.”

“Consequently, the Executive Governor of Osun State Senator (Dr.) Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke felicitates with the faithful of traditional religion worshippers and extends his best wishes to them for a joyous and memorable Isese Festival.”

In Ogun State, a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, on Monday, noted that the decision reflects the state government’s recognition of the cultural and spiritual values of the Yoruba heritage.

Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs,” the statement read.

In Oyo State, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, confirmed the holiday in a circular dated August 18, 2025.

According to the circular, Governor Seyi Makinde approved the work-free day in line with the state’s recognition of the annual festival.

“His Excellency requests that the occasion be used to pray for the peace, unity, and stability of the state in particular and the country in general,” the statement said.

Earlier, Lagos State also declared August 20 a public holiday for Isese Day.

Isese is a Yoruba term that broadly refers to tradition, customs, or ancestral ways. In a cultural and religious context, it is often used to describe the indigenous Yoruba religion and traditional practices, including beliefs, rituals, and moral codes passed down through generations.
