A corps member identified as Lohina Bamaiyi Ajegena has died a few days after arriving at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Maiduguri, Borno State.

It was gathered that Lovina died on April 27, 2026, after falling ill shortly into the NYSC orientation programme.

Lovina’s colleagues confirmed the incident on Facebook.

Narrating the events that led to her death, a colleague, Augustine Pamela, said they met at a motor park while booking a vehicle to the camp and became acquainted.

She said they travelled together to Maiduguri, completed their registration side by side, and were assigned the same room and bunk space, leading many to assume they had been long-time friends.

Pamela explained that six days into the programme, Lovina fell ill and she took on the responsibility of caring for her.

She added that in the process of attending to her, she also became ill, and both of them were admitted to the same hospital, where corper Lovina’s condition deteriorated.

Pamela said she assisted Lovina with daily needs, including helping her to the bathroom, feeding her, and staying awake at night to monitor her condition.

She noted that despite the care, Lovina continued to experience severe pain and often expressed gratitude for the assistance she received.

Pamela further stated that Lovina held on to her during moments of distress, as she struggled with her health condition.

She described the experience as emotionally overwhelming, noting that she watched helplessly as Lovina battled the illness.

She added that many people commended her efforts, although she remained uncertain about how to define the bond they shared, given how recently they had met.

Pamela said Lovina died on April 27 at about 7:03 a.m., leaving her in shock over how quickly their connection had formed and ended.

She expressed grief over the loss, describing Lovina as someone who became very important to her within a short time.
